Can Hemp Make You Fail a Drug Test?
Hemp is becoming evermore popular because of the many uses the plant has. There are thousands of products produced today that are made with hemp. Hemp is used in making clothes, lotion, paper, milk, building materials and even nano-materials. You can also consume hemp in a variety of ways. Ingesting hemp seeds is also a good source of protein. However, some people are worried that ingesting hemp or smoking hemp wraps could make them fail a drug test.
Addressing Hemp Myths
The hemp plant is, of course, related to the marijuana plant. In fact, they’re very similar. Everyone knows this and there is a common misconception that since the marijuana plant and the hemp plant are in the same species, the must be the same chemical make-up. This simply isn’t true. Both marijuana and hemp come from the plant species Cannabis Sativa L., but selective breeding has created a dramatic difference in the marijuana plant vs. the hemp plant. Currently, strains of marijuana typically contain more than 15% THC and the hemp plant contains less than 1%.
Why People Ingest Hemp
There are a number of reasons why people use hemp in their diets. Hemp is a great source of protein, but there are many other benefits of ingesting hemp that you might not know about. For example, hemp contains GLA! GLA is a necessary building block for some prostaglandins — hormone-like chemicals in the body that help smooth muscles, control inflammation and body temperature, and are vital to other body functions. Hemp can also hemp with weight loss, arthritis and joint pain, and digestive health. One of the most apparent benefits of ingesting hemp are the strengthening of your hair, skin and nails. Obviously, ingesting hemp has value and there is no reason you should be worried about hemp in your diet.
Hemp Energy Drinks
These drinks have been showing up in convenience stores and even large chain stores. Hemp energy drinks often show a hemp leaf (marijuana leaf) and claim to provide an explosion of energy using the power of hemp. I did not do the research, so I cannot comment with real science regarding the effectiveness of hemp energy drinks, but I can say that it is very unlikely one of these drinks could cause you to fail a drug test. With that being said, I would be leery of hemp energy drinks in states that have legalized marijuana and currently allow recreational use. If you happen to be in a legalized state or if you run into a shady character at a party, make sure you read the label carefully. All drinks with marijuana are required to have a label that states the amount of THC in the container. If there is no label stating the THC value of the drink, you will be in the clear and the hemp energy drink will not make you fail a drug test.
Will I Fail My Drug Test?
That depends on which of the hemp plants you are ingesting. If you are smoking hemp wraps with marijuana in them, you will most likely fail a drug test. If you are ingesting hemp for the health benefits, it is very unlikely that you will fail a drug test. Most drug tests look for the THC compound in your urine or bloodstream and the regular hemp plant does not contain enough THC to trigger a positive result on your drug test.
